Mother’s Day in Nicaragua is celebrated on May 30th. There is a shelter in Managua for mothers with their children who are undergoing cancer treatments at the children’s hospital “La Mascota.” This workshop in May was given to be a fundraiser for them.
The venue was in a large, beautiful bookstore that also has a cafeteria, museum, and auditorium.
Beautiful atrium
The workshop included: a brief history of denim; unraveling denim scraps to understand its warp, weft, white and indigo-blue dyed threads, weave and weight; different visible mending techniques; introduction to two basic stitches, and finally, practicing visible mending.
Unfortunately, there were few participants. But fortunately, they were all enthusiastic and engaged. In addition, two of them have their own small businesses that include painting on textiles. What more could one want?
