col·lab·or·ation

Earth Day is only celebrated once a year on April 22 although it should be every day. This year is no exception as terrible climactic news delivered by scientists is usually overlooked by mainstream media.

Three small entrepreneurs in Managua decided to join forces (collaborate) to promote Earth Day in an educational way to raise awareness, and yes, promote their products. Specifically, their work involves saving items destined for landfills by extending their useful lives.

1. SASTRA  – Unique products are made with recycled vinyl from publicity banners thanks to strategic alliances with private companies and marketing agencies.

2. DePapel – This group of women give a second life to paper from magazines, brochures, and flyers, by turning them into beautiful baskets and fashion accessories.

3. Maria Magnolia Designs – Used denim clothing destined for landfills is remade into unique, upcycled garments.

Collaboration according to Merriam Webster is “to work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavor.” Cambridge defines it more loosely as “the act of working together with other people or organizations to create or achieve something.”

This “collaboration” began with a consensus to work together, then a photo shoot in a local park.  The images highlighted the usage, beauty and practicality of different upcycled products. Afterwards, these images were shared on social media.

It was a quick and simple collaboration, but an effective way to team up and work together for the good of this one planet. Afterall, a circular economy is not only possible but urgent.
