Sewing Censorship, Seriously?!

“Covid Creation # 4,” or so it was originally called.

I am a bit perplexed by this. Why would you censor words that are not racist, xenophobic, prejudice, political, religious, misogynist, critical or hateful in any way?

Sewing communities online are usually helpful and inspiring as they share a common love of needle and thread. There are countless sewing sites and groups that cater to an amazing number of specialties or generalities.  Individuals join to share their own work, view others’ work, pose related questions and share best practices. Understandably there is no room for hateful words or unnecessary criticism of another person’s work.

What took me by surprise was one popular site that censored my work as it is prohibited to refer to the current worldwide health crisis. That is, mentioning a “Covid” creation was the offending word. Evidently, any referral to the pandemic, virus, etc. is prohibited.  Hmmmmm…. does mentioning reality truly conjure up negativity or diminish artistic creations?

In my case it is exactly the opposite!  I have been inspired to express myself and dive back into a hobby with more vigor and enthusiasm. I have found meditative stitching and sewing to help my mental health. And yes, sharing my creations is also a rewarding activity and if I mentioned the inspiration (be it a positive or negative effect on individuals) isn’t that part of what art is all about?

I grudgingly resubmitted my post with new wording that did not refer to the pandemic in any way.  At the same time, I do not believe that sanitizing or erasing this current reality is helpful.

  1. Seriously? I guess it’s an attempt to keep people from giving opinions that could become fodder for arguments.

  2. Censorship of words and deeds, seems in direct opposition to creativity. Sad news. I love your work; inspirational.
