Choose Fabrics Ethically: A Simple Rule of Thumb

The quick guide: Rule of thumb

When choosing your fabrics and textiles it is often difficult to know which are best for the environment. Remember, best are those that are made from natural materials and can be returned to the earth to create resources. Synthetics and others should be considered “toxic” for the environment.

Natural, biodegradable fabrics include:

  • Cotton
  • Silk
  • Wool
  • Cashmere
  • Hemp
  • Bamboo
  • Linen

Non-biodegradable fabrics, basically anything that is manufactured and synthetic can’t be composted.

This includes:

  • Polyester
  • Spandex
  • Nylon
  • Rayon

These textiles eventually break down, but it can take up to 200 years.

For eco-fashion brands to label themselves ‘compostable’ 60-90% of the product must break down into C02 within 180 days in a commercial composting facility.

-The general rule of thumb: if it is natural it can compost.

While we are not always able to choose 100% natural fabrics, the more we do, the better it is! Choose wisely and ethically.
