I am a new blogger and have only glossed over the “do’s and don’ts.” My blog is dedicated to things related to sewing, stitching, and upcycling textiles. It cannot, however, stand-alone from the realities of what impacts me. Sometimes they inspire and sometimes they infuriate.
As an expat living in a developing country, I am often confronted with situations that give me pause. Poverty, poor education, corruption, and injustice are just a few. But when my country of origin begins to move toward these things, I am both alarmed and concerned.
January 6, 2021 is one of those days that US history will not judge kindly. Headlines like “America Hit Rock Bottom” and others say much. Words matter and the extremes on both sides have opposing perspectives of what transpired that day. What is not disputable: violence was encouraged; unproven and fraudulent claims were continually promoted by elected leaders; journalists were attacked; law enforcement failed; federal buildings were unlawfully entered; looting and theft occurred; congressional lawmakers scrambled for safety and sadly, deaths occurred.
The upcoming days leading to a new president being sworn in will show whether this democracy and its founding principles will hold true and steadfast. What is the correct course of action to take considering what happened? And let us call it what it was: insurrection. Interpretations of laws and actions can be quite tricky, but most are very clear. Will offenders be punished? Will they be pardoned? What will happen in these coming days and in the next administration?
I have no answers, just hopes and prayers. Also, I am incredibly grateful for my sewing and stitching which can be meditative and healing. So, happy stitching and sewing…..
