“Synesthesia,” a First Art Show

What joy to be invited to my first art show! The exhibition is called “Synesthesia” and includes about forty Nicaraguan artists, as well as one Brazilian and one US citizen. Of the two entered textile pieces, one is mine and called“Deconstructing Blues.” The exhibit runs for two weeks in the Pablo Antonio Cuadra auditoriums on the second floor of Hispamer in Managua.

The day before the opening of the exhibition, the wife of the Brazilian ambassador (who also exhibited) hosted a potluck cocktail party for the artists. It was a nice time to meet other artists before the showing.

The first two days had a concurrent exhibition of cacao with artisanal chocolatiers displaying and selling their products. They chose an art piece to talk about and I was flattered to hear that a son’s friend chose mine. He had worked in denim production and so was familiar with the textile itself.

“Deconstructing Blues” is quite large measuring about one meter wide by four meters high. It has three sections starting with a simple pair of blue jean fronts at the top. The middle section has all the pieces of a pair of jeans deconstructed with open seams (hems, waistbands, etc.). And finally, the bottom section has several pieces of denim articles including straps, patchwork pieces, pockets, etc.

The first textile art piece last year was “Subversive Pockets,” so I now add “Deconstructing Blues” to my collection. Already I am looking forward to a showing of my next denim piece which has already begun.
