Denim Warp and Weft

Jeans are made from denim and upcycling them is a wonderful way to help the environment, create unique clothing and items, contribute to sustainability, extend the life of textiles, and so much more.

Denim is one of the most recognizable fabrics in the world; its color, fiber content, and weave are just three of many reasons why.

Here is a quick lesson with four facts about the weaving and color of denim:

  1. In the basic weaving of fabrics, there are two types of threads: the “warp” runs lengthwise, and the “weft” runs crosswise.
  2. The warp thread is indigo dyed while the warp thread is left undyed or is white.
  3. The weaving technique for denim is like twill in that the weft thread passes over two or more warp threads before going under one.
  4. One side of the fabric is dominated by the blue warp threads and the other side is dominated by the white weft threads.
Warp and Weft are different colors in denim and woven like a twill.
Twill and denim have similar weaves.

Now that you know these 4 fun facts about denim you can use them in your upcycling work. Stay tuned for more information about denim coming up in the next blogs.
